Disclaimer: Electric Bike Speed and Throttle Use in the UK

The use of electric bikes (e-bikes) in the United Kingdom is subject to specific legal regulations. According to UK law, for an electric bike to be classified as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) and be used without registration, taxation, or a driving licence:

  • The motor must have a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts.

  • The motor must not propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

  • The motor must only assist when the rider is pedalling (with certain exceptions for "twist and go" throttles manufactured before January 1, 2016).

Electric bikes that exceed these limits, including those with full-throttle capability or higher speed assistance, may be considered motor vehicles under UK law. Use of such bikes on public roads or cycle paths may require registration, insurance, a valid driving licence, and the use of safety equipment.

This information is provided for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Users are responsible for ensuring their electric bike complies with current UK legislation. For full details, consult the UK government website or your local authority
